Structural Integrity: Post Depth & Concrete

Digging posts to a minimum of 600mm and filling with concrete is a crucial step for the longevity and safety of the fence.

Why 600mm?

In many regions, 600mm is the minimum standard for a stable post foundation to resist wind loads. Depending on your soil type (e.g., loose sandy soil versus heavy clay) and the height of your fence, local building codes may actually require deeper holes (up to 900mm or more) to reach firm, undisturbed ground.

The Role of Concrete

Filling with concrete creates a "footing." This prevents the post from leaning over time due to wind pressure or ground movement.

Pro-Tip

Ensure the hole is slightly wider than the post (usually 200mm–300mm wide) to allow for an adequate "collar" of concrete around the post. Always slope the top of the concrete away from the post so that water drains off the surface rather than pooling at the base and causing rot or rust.
